Paper Hearts

"When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, 'I used everything you gave me.'"

"Paper Hearts"

A's and B's are traced across pages
That are crisp and scented
Like piles of school supplies
Fit for a brand new year...
One that's followed the others in stale monotony
To the naive, untrained eye
That only perceives lists and routines
But not the crafting of a story that tells one's life
Communicating laughter, tears, and daydreams
That carry a person to a hopeful place
A mental state
Sculpted by aspiration
Derived from the what's and the who's
Scribbled on a plain manuscript
One that will soon be filled with color and ink
As fonts change to better fit the phase
The time and the place in your life
Where you take a seat
And finally meet that someone who brings you warmth and a smile
All the while The Author has written
Each and every scene, full of meaning
Unfolding as the chapters progress
With worn and torn pages
Never forgotten but always cherished
A story containing a wealth of hope
Rich in detail and diction
Bending forks in the road
Living, breathing non-fiction
Tangible sights, sounds, and smells
That reach out and enlighten you
Take you and guide you along this landscape
Skillfully created by The All-Knowing
Illuminating truth from within
Where you've been, where you're going
Every path converging by plan
And you stand as a character with a role
With a mission
Not just a number or statistic
But creation with significance
Lying in the palm of your hands
So think, say, do, become, strive
And these paper hearts and souls come to life.
